Behind the Scenes: Swig – Quick Animation

INTRODUCTION

Whats up, my identify is Yared Tadesse, a 3D artist from Ethiopia. I work as a freelancer. I began studying 3D modeling about 4 years in the past via YouTube movies. I primarily deal with characters, and lately, I’m studying about rigging and 3D character animation.

INSPIRATION

This paintings was impressed by the wonderful idea artist Nikolai Lockertsen’s 2D animation work on Instagram, particularly this publish on “Happy New Year”. I actually favored the fashion and temper of the artwork, so I made a decision to recreate it in Blender and observe my animation abilities as nicely.

MODELING

First, I began engaged on the background by blocking out large shapes with cubes and cylinders. This helped me place my character precisely.

Subsequent, I began including small particulars to the buildings and partitions via easy extrusions, beveling, and utilizing curves for the wires.

Lastly, I added smaller particulars by sculpting and utilizing a displace modifier for results like snow. As for the snow, I sculpted it onto a sphere utilizing a sneak hook and seize brush.

For the character, I used spheres as a base to dam out the physique, after which sculpted the small print.

TEXTURING

I used PolyHaven for many of my textures, together with the snow, buildings, and partitions. For the remaining, I turned to Substance Painter. For the snow impact on textures, I painted a black and white masks in Blender’s texture painter to mix the rock texture with the snow texture.

Right here is the painted masks:

LIGHTING

I used three-point lighting, with a fireplace in entrance of him serving as the important thing gentle. Moreover, I added a noise modifier to the depth keyframe of the purpose gentle to mimic the fireplace’s lighting, which I imported as a picture.

For fill gentle, I used an HDRI from Poly Haven with low depth. As for my rim gentle, I used a big space gentle. I additionally included some spotlights within the background to gentle particular areas, aiming to realize lighting much like the idea artwork.

RIGGING AND ANIMATING

To rig my character, I used auto-rig professional. For animating, I used the pose-to-pose methodology since I had the animation in 2D, which made the method smoother. Additionally, I used Marvelous Designer for the fabric simulation.

COMPOSITING

For the composition, I used a bunch enter connected to a lens distortion which was once more connected to the glare node. The Glare node was plugged to a Combine Coloration(Multiply) node through a Coloration Steadiness. A Field Masks node plugged to a Invert Coloration was additionally connected to the above talked about, Combine Coloration node.

And that was it! Beneath are the renders and the animation video.
